Timeless pieces for everyday living
The Shop
Rusticator is a home furnishings and interiors shop located at 10 Main Street in the village of Seal Harbor, Maine, on Mount Desert Island. Our little building started at the head of Seal Harbor before moving to its current location on Main Street many years ago. For most of her life, she was the home of Billings Market.
Furnishings
The Experience
When you step inside the shop, it’s like stepping inside the house of a friend. That’s because the shop is also a home. Owners Laura and Vassar Pierce keep a small apartment behind the store and Vassar’s parents live in the apartment upstairs for part of each year. So when they — or a member of their staff — step out to greet you, they are meeting you as their guest.

The Collection
Inspired by Mount Desert Island’s iconic summer cottages, our collection of home furnishings and interiors represents a bright new take on sturdy old designs that you are unlikely to find anywhere else. These first-generation heirlooms embody the simple island beauty and deep community traditions of the rusticator lifestyle.

The People
Rusticator is the shop-child of interior designer Laura Keeler Pierce and her husband, M. Vassar Pierce. But mostly, this baby belongs to Laura. “Rusticator,” Laura says, “is the result of a lifetime surrounded by sawdust and custom draperies.” When L+V are not behind the counter at Rusticator you are most likely to find them on top of a mountain with their golden retriever or volunteering with Friends of Acadia.
